SOCDS Census Data

This system provides data for individual cities from a database of Census data . It contains data for metropolitan central cities and metropolitan suburban places for 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000. In addition, Poverty rate estimates are presented for the intercensal years, 1993, 1995, 1997, and 1998 in this system. SOCDS also includes data for the entire metropolitan area encompassing each city and the suburban area remainder. Data for these "suburbs" are calculated as the data for the metropolitan area less the sum of the data for all central cities (if any) in the metropolitan area. In New England States, you can choose whether metropolitan areas follow the standard MSA/PMSA definition, or the New England County Metropolitan Area (NECMA) definition.

All tables but those on Jobs by Place of Work have been updated to include 2000 Census data. Note that 2000 Census data released to date on employed residents by occupation are not sufficiently detailed to compare directly to data from previous Censuses.

The following table depicts the number of central cities and suburban places contained in SOCDS by decennial year. Metropolitan areas as defined in 1999, and the census places contained in these areas according to the 2000 census, serve as the basis for the collection of cities presented in SOCDS during all years.

Central Cities Suburban Places
1970 539 4080
1980 542 9363
1990 542 10351
2000 542 11397

Poverty rates estimates are provided for all central cities but only for incorporated suburban places during the intercensal years.
